Google ilmoitti 12. tammikuuta harkitsevansa vetäytymistä Kiinasta aiheuttaen suuren mediakohun maailmalla. Hakujätti kertoi mahdollisen vetäytymisen syiksi Kiinan sananvapausongelmat sekä viime aikaiset internethyökkäykset, joiden takana Googlen mukaan on Kiinan hallitus. Googlen lisäksi ainakin 20 muuta länsimaista yritystä on joutunut hyökkäysten kohteiksi.
Googlen lakiosaston johtaja David Drummond ilmoitti yrityksensä päätöksestä ensimmäiseksi Googlen virallisessa blogissa. Drummond mainitsi ilmoituksessa muun muassa, että kolmannet osapuolet ovat murtautuneet rutiininomaisesti kiinalaisten ihmisoikeusaktivistien gmail-tileille. Googlen johtajat päättivätkin lopettaa hakutulosten sensuroinnin Kiinassa, vaikka se tarkoittaisikin liiketoiminnan lopettamista siellä.
Kiinan hallinto pitää kuitenkin kiinni kannastaan, että Google ei voi ainoana poikkeuksena olla noudattamatta Kiinan lakia. Ulkoministeriön tiedottaja Ma Zhaoxu huomautti, että myös Kiina on nettihyökkäysten kohteena, CRI kertoo. Xinhua lainasi erästä toista ministeriön tiedottajaa, joka vakuutti lehdistötilaisuudessa, että Kiinan internet on “avoin”.
Kiinan ja Googlen välinen kiista saattaa vaikuttaa Kiinan ja USA:n suhteisiin laajemminkin. Washington Timesin mukaan Kiinan ja Googlen ongelmat sattuivat pahaan aikaan, sillä Yhdysvallat yrittää parhaillaan rakentaa tiiviimpiä suhteita Kiinaan. Nettihyökkäykset ovat myös provosoineet Yhdysvallat tekemään asiasta virallisen valituksen Kiinalle, Sydney Morning Herald kirjoittaa. Nähtäväksi jää, kuinka kauaskantoiset seuraukset Googlen mahdollisella vetäytymisellä Kiinasta olisi.
