Kiinan kansantasavallan perustamisesta tuli kuluneeksi 60 vuotta lokakuun 1. päivänä. Kiinan valtionradio CRI teki erikoisraportin valtion noususta. Kanadan kansallisen tv- ja radioyhtiön CBC:n mukaan Kiina juhlisti tilaisuutta historiansa suurimmalla sotilasparaatilla. Oliko juhlallisuuksien tarkoitus muistuttaa maailmaa uudesta suurvallasta?

Kiinan taloudellinen kasvu

Muun maailman pyrkiessä minimoimaan finanssikriisin vaikutuksia Kiinan talous kasvoi. People's Dailyn selonteko muistuttaa, että odotuksien vastaisesti Kiina saavutti asettamansa kahdeksan prosentin kasvun vuonna 2009. Wall Street Journalin mukaan vuodelle 2010 annettu ennuste näyttää ruusuiselta, kun Kiinasta tulee maailman suurin vientivaltio, jättäen varjoonsa jopa Saksan.

Xinjiangin mellakat

Xinjiangin autonomisella alueella heinäkuun 5. alkunsa saaneet väkivaltaisuudet vaativat yli sadan ihmisen hengen, raportoi Xinhua. Tuomioistuimet jakoivat uiguuriseparatistien syyksi laitetuista mellakoista kuolemantuomioita, joista viimeisimmät julistettiin Yahoo! News:in mukaan joulukuun 23. päivänä. Reutersin mainitseman Xinjiangin edustajan mukaan tasapainon ylläpitäminen alueella tulee vaatimaan pidemmän aikavälin ponnisteluja.

A/H1N1 hysteria

Pelko siitä, että A/H1N1-virus aiheuttaisi samanlaisen kaaoksen kuin SARS, sai Kiinan tekemään ennaltaehkäiseviä toimenpiteitä rajoittaakseen taudin leviämistä. Virkamies kertoi AFP-uutistoimistolle, että Kiina järjesti maailman suurimman rokotuskampanjan rokottaen melkein 50 miljoonaa ihmistä sikainfluenssaa vastaan. Metro News kertoi, että Kiina on yhä varuillaan, sillä se kehotti ihmisiä valppauteen taudin leviämisen estämiseksi kiinalaisten uutena vuonna 14. helmikuuta.

Kiinan rooli ilmastonmuutoksen vastaisessa kamppailussa

Kööpenhaminassa järjestetyssä YK:n ilmastokokouksessa Kiinan rooli ilmastonmuutoksen vastaisessa taistelussa kyseenalaistettiin. Financial Timesin mukaan Kiinaa syytettiin neuvottelujen estämisestä, kun kokouksessa ei saatu aikaan laillisesti sitovaa ilmastosopimusta. Kiina on kieltänyt syytteet ja pitää Kööpenhaminan kokousta tärkeänä askeleena ilmastonmuutoksen vastaisessa taistelussa.
